On this day in 1983 astrophysicist Sally Ride took off from Kennedy Space Center aboard Space Shuttle Challenger to become the first American woman in space. Designated STS-7, the mission successfully deployed two satellites, Anik C2 for Telesat of Canada, and Palapa B1 for Indonesia. She remains the youngest American astronaut to travel to space.
